Toe tappin’ bluegrass, mixed with a little face paint, makes for good fun!

August 6, 2010

Another great show, another great crowd!  Back Burner kept the crowd humming and the kids dancing.  Thank you to all our neighbors for your contributions to the West Seattle Food Bank — we collected a barrel of food and cash donations to help out a commendable non-profit and community resource.

Thanks to Wild Smiles and Alethea the Face Painter, the crowd was sprinkled with little faces decorated with spiders, orcas, butterflies and unicorns.  It’s sponsors like PCC, Prudential’s the Johnson team, Weitzel Construction among many others (please see our list of Event Sponsors) who help bring free music and face painting tonight.  I think it was a hit.

Please join us next Thursday evening at 6:30 when we welcome Pearl Django with Greta Matassa on vocals.  Isn’t this a great neighborhood?

Back Burner at Hiawatha TONIGHT, Bring Donations for the West Seattle Food Bank

August 5, 2010

Another beautiful evening is expected in West Seattle, perfect weather for the second show featuring Back Burner at Hiawatha Park.

“Back Burner is a 6-piece acoustic string band that plays a toe tappin’ mix of bluegrass, swing, jazz, country, and blues. Their music blends jazz vocals and bluegrass harmonies into what Doug Bright, editor of the Heritage Music Review, calls “A bluegrass swing fusion that works!”  The band plays original songs plus old and new standards from a variety of genres. The music appeals to all ages!”

Also present tonight to collect donations from the community is the West Seattle Food Bank.  For almost 30 years, the Food Bank has been working to end hunger in our community – providing food and other basic supplies, plus education and referral services to neighbors in need.  Bins will be on hand to collect non perishable food, and of course, cash donations are always welcomed.

As if that’s not enough to get you out and to the park, there will be FREE face painting tonight!  ANA will be there again selling our new Admiral apparel – track jackets are $50, adults t-shirts are $20 and kids are $15.  The money we raise from sales, goes right back into events like tonight!

PCC’s Kid’s Pick truck will be serving up samples again.  Prudential Northwest’s the Johnson team will be there too!  Join us for some music and fun, and rally for your community at the same time!  See you tonight.

A HUGE turnout at Hiawatha for the first concert!

July 30, 2010

People arrived pushing strollers, pulling wagons, and on bikes to see the first concert in the park featuring the StarlingsSummer Concerts at Hiawatha debuted its 2010 season to a neighborhood crowd of more than 400, estimates Al Mason, a long time attendant at Hiawatha Community Center, “and this is only gonna get bigger,” he says.  At one point, there were 65 little one’s dancing up a storm in front of the stage while parents and neighbors watched and listened to the sweet, folksy sound of the Starlings.

PCC’s ‘kid’s picks’ truck was handing out tasty samples and Gini and Jayme Johnson from Prudential Northwest were on hand to show to their support.  Other sponsors present were Manuela from Cometa Playschool, Fresh Bistro, Tracy and Patrick from West Seattle Blog and of course Dave Weitzel and the rest of crew from the Admiral Neighborhood Association.  Thanks again to our sponsors for helping to create a fantastic concert series!

It was a gorgeous Seattle evening.  Blankets were spread out surrounded by picnic dinners, take out boxes and lots of friends.  There was swaying and rockin’, clapping hands, a little conversation, giggles and laughter — I think everyone had fun!  Thanks for coming and can’t wait to see you next Thursday for Back Burner – and don’t forget your donations for the West Seattle Food Bank.

Tonight begins the first show of six concerts scheduled Thursday evenings at 6:30PM in Hiawatha Park.  Meet the Starlings,

“Known for their three-part harmonies and melodic hooks, The Starlings’ country-folk sound is influenced by the variety of their backgrounds. Original members Joy Mills, Tom Parker and Aimee Tubbs were reared with the juicy mixture of old country, rock ‘n’ roll, musicals, the 80’s, and a long list of songwriters….Their debut album, Songbook (2006), put them on KEXP’s “Top Ten Northwest Bands” for eight weeks.”

Thanks to all of our sponsors who helped bring these FREE concerts to West Seattle, particularly our gold level sponsors, PCC and Prudential Northwest, the Johnson team!

The Admiral Neighborhood Association will be selling the new “Admiral” t-shirts.  Many of our sponsors will have tables set up to share information about their businesses.  As well, PCC will have their Kids Pick truck on site with lots of delicious kid friendly samples.  Please stop by, check them all out and put them on your list of places to support!
